Genevieve Lake Competes in Supima Design Competition at NY Fashion Week

FIDM Student Genevieve Lake is one of seven finalists who competed in the 11th annual Supima Design Competition, which culminated with a runway show hosted by June Ambrose, at Pier 59, as part of New York Fashion Week on Thursday afternoon.

Each university assigned mentors to work with their finalist in addition to Supima's design mentor, CFDA Award-winning designer Bibhu Mohapatra. The finalists were required to create five looks for each type of Supima fabric: shirting, knit, velveteen, twill, and denim. They also designed one evening wear look for each fabric, resulting in a five-look capsule runway collection.

Supima is the marketing brand for American-grown Pima cotton. The highly selective contest featured top talent from American design schools. A panel of judges comprised of industry pros announced the winning designer, Lili Shi of The Fashion Institute of Technology, who received a $10,000 cash prize.

Genevieve, a Fashion Design Student at FIDM, also competed alongside Alanna Lizun of Kent State University; Bryn Lourié of Rhode Island School of Design; Jessica Chang of Parsons School of Design; Jessica Rubinstein of Savannah College of Art and Design; and Paula Amaral, Academy of Art University.

"Dreamed of showing in New York Fashion Week since I was six years old," wrote Genevieve on Instagram. "Today my dream came true, and I can finally announce I'll also be showing my work in Paris Fashion Week. Thank you, Supima, for every opportunity." Her collection is comprised of vibrant color combinations, unusual cut-outs, and inventive silhouettes. In a Supima video, she said, "The woman who will wear my clothes is someone who knows who they are. She's just a very independent woman."

Ambrose, a celebrity stylist, costume designer, and creative director who has hosted the Supima Design Competition runway show two years in a row, said, "What a great way to kick of New York Fashion Week by showing such exemplary talent. The level they are performing at is like designers who have been working in the business for years. It's so important to support and incubate such talent."
